The castles of the Treviso area

The castles of the Treviso area

From Susegana to Collalto to the fortress of Castelvecchio, the Prosecco hills offer scenery that boasts the presence of numerous medieval castles and fortresses.

The ideal itinerary begins in Susegana, the town of two castles.

The castle of San Salvatore, residence of the Collalto family that dominates the town with its thirty thousand square meters between fortress and village. From here, a spectacular walk leads to the ruins of the first Collalto settlement in the Piave region: a mighty keep that still stands out among the many traces of its impregnable triple walls.

Farther west, between Farra di Soligo and Col San Martino, stand the three Credazzo Towers, linked by walls bordering two inner courtyards. In the heart of the Cartizze area one can admire the ruins of another fortification: the Mondeserto Castle, which can be reached by following the signs leading to the sites of the Great War.

Farther north, at Cison di Valmarino, a spur of Mount Col de Moi became, from the end of the 12th century, the site of a military fortress that the Caminese feudal lords later made habitable by erecting a palace and a central tower surrounded by walls.

Vittorio Veneto, born in the late 19th century from the merger of Serravalle and Ceneda, preserves the forts of the two centers, emblems of their very different histories. In Serravalle, a stronghold of the Da Camino family, the Castrum has stood since the 12th century.

Ceneda, on the other hand, is dominated by the Castle of San Martino on San Paolo hill, connected to the Cathedral square by a short, very scenic road. The itinerary cannot but end in Conegliano, a few kilometers from Susegana, at Conegliano Castle, where you can also admire elements of fortification dating back to the 11th century.
